چکیده

In this chapter, we present a model parameterization for organized tropical convection and convectively coupled tropical waves. The model is based on the main three cloud types: congestus, deep, and stratifrom that are observed to play an important role in the dynamics and morphology of tropical convective systems. The model is based on the self-similarity across scales of tropical convective systems and uses physically sound theory about the mutual interactions between the three cloud types and the evironment. Both linear analysis and numerical simulations of convectively coupled waves and the Madden-Julian oscilation are discussed.

The MJO in a Coarse-Resolution GCM with a Stochastic Multicloud Parameterization

The representation of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is still a challenge for numerical weather prediction and general circulationmodels (GCMs) because of the inadequate treatment of convection and the associated interactions across scales by the underlying cumulus parameterizations. One new promising direction is the use of the stochastic multicloud model (SMCM) that has been designed spe...

Madden-Julian Oscillation analog and intraseasonal variability in a multicloud model above the equator.

The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the dominant component of tropical intraseasonal variability, and a theory explaining its structure and successful numerical simulation remains a major challenge. A successful model for the MJO should have a propagation speed of 4-7 m/s predicted by theory; a wavenumber-2 or -3 structure for the planetary-scale, low-frequency envelope with distinct active ...

Simple models for the diurnal cycle and convectively coupled waves

This paper presents a study of the diurnal cycle of tropical precipitation and its interaction with convectively coupled waves in the context of simple models with crude vertical resolution. One and two baroclinic mode models are tested in both the context of a one-column model and the context of full spatial dependency that permits waves to propagate and interact with the diurnal cycle. It is ...

The Explicit-Cloud Pparameterized-Pollutant hybrid approach for aerosol--cloud interactions in multiscale modeling framework models: tracer transport results

All estimates of aerosol indirect effects on the global energy balance have either completely neglected the influence of aerosol on convective clouds or treated the influence in a highly parameterized manner. Embedding cloud-resolving models (CRMs) within each grid cell of a global model provides a multiscale modeling framework for treating both the influence of aerosols on convective as well a...

Investigation of Vacancy Defects on the Young’s Modulus of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Composites in Axial Direction via a Multiscale Modeling Approach

In this article, the influence of various vacancy defects on the Young’s modulus of carbon nanotube (CNT) - reinforcement polymer composite in the axial direction is investigated via a structural model in ANSYS software. Their high strength can be affected by the presence of defects in the nanotubes used as reinforcements in practical nanocomposites. Molecular structural mechanics (MSM)/finite ...
